Teaching
I am an active instructor of classical drawing and painting, offering in-person classes and workshops at Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, Maine. Full and half scholarships may be available to students of all ages.
Since 2021, I’ve been a co-teacher at the online Aristides Atelier, led by my former teacher, Juliette Aristides.
I also work privately with individual students. Most meetings are held online via Zoom, though I periodically meet with local students in person. Weekly, bi-weekly, or custom schedules are available. Feel free to send me a message for more information.
From time to time, I offer online workshops as well. Subscribe to my newsletter to be the first to hear about upcoming sessions.

“Joshua Langstaff is a consummate artist and inspiring teacher. He doesn’t simply impart knowledge, although his knowledge is formidable, he cultivates curiosity and encourages students to persevere and discover their way forward. His classes enjoy a warm camaraderie and spirit of adventure. I always look forward to them.”
— Chuck, Maine, U.S.A.
“I had the privilege of studying with Josh in the Aristides Atelier. It was a special opportunity to learn from such a great artist. But more than that, it was a real gift to study with someone so talented and so deeply committed as a teacher. His kindness, patience, and encouragement were part of every session. Even though it’s been some time since I studied with him, his words and personal example have stayed with me—always encouraging, always inspiring.”
— Laura, Jerusalem, Israel
“I’ve been drawing all my life, so I signed up for Joshua’s basic drawing class just to brush up. Instead, I had breakthrough after breakthrough—and felt a little sad I hadn’t learned a classical approach sooner. I watched complete beginners make stunning progress. Joshua is classically trained and a master of his craft, but what makes his teaching powerful is the way he trains you to truly see. His classes are focused, inspiring, and just a little addictive.”
— Cleo, New Hampshire, U.S.A.
“I so enjoy classes with Joshua! His great talent, mastery, and deep knowledge of painting have drawn me to repeatedly take more classes and workshops with him. Each level builds on the next and brings new skills, insights, and understanding. Joshua illustrates class content in many ways—by bringing his own work for us to study and sharing his painting process through demos, both real treats! I also love that he gives plenty of individual feedback.”
— Bele, Maine, U.S.A.
“I am very impressed with Joshua’s teaching ability. I had dreamed of becoming a good draftsman, but under Joshua’s guidance I have become better than I could have hoped. I appreciate that he always answers all of my questions, while simplifying the art concepts that are challenging to comprehend. Each lesson is very productive and I learn so much. Thank you Joshua!”
— Keegan, Oregon, U.S.A.

— Mary Ann, Maine, U.S.A.
“Over many years, I’ve studied with many instructors. My favorite painting of all time is a portrait I painted in a class with Josh Langstaff. It now hangs in my dining room, where I can admire it every day. Josh is a generous and insightful painter and instructor.”
